The Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa

The mark of a very good hotel is that somehow, against the odds, you believe you are the first person there, and that your room, or in this case, over-water bungalow, is yours alone.

Everything inside each bungalow at the Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort is designed to maximize the view over lagoon water so blue. It looks like it has been retouched. The resort is big, yet the bungalows feel intimate and private. Each spacious deck leading down to steps into the lagoon is designed so you can only see a few bungalows, while in fact there are over 200.

As for the public areas, the restaurants and bar areas are fun and funky and thankfully, owe nothing to clichéd tropical design of the past. Vistas across sand and water are splendid. The architect, Philippe Grandou, a Frenchman who has lived in Tahiti for a decade, is also a keen photographer and everything here looks as if it has been framed - spectacularly - through the lens.

The Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa isn’t a cheap stop over, but it’s an unforgettable one.
