Janis Joplin Dies at Landmark Hotel - Hotels Where Bad S%$# Happens

Murray Bevan | August 1st, 2006

Janis Joplin’s life was ended at the Hollywood Landmark Hotel in 1970 during the recording sessions of her album ‘Pearl’.

After injecting herself with heroin and walking to the hotel lobby to buy a pack of cigarettes, Joplin returned to her room and fell to the ground, breaking her nose in the fall, after being overcome by the drug. Her overdose was apparently as a result of her depression since her boyfriend at the time had failed to show for a date.

Her producer, Paul Rothchild, had become concerned earlier in the night when Joplin didn’t turn up to record vocals for one of her tracks. On arriving at The Landmark, Rothchild saw Joplin’s psychedelic-coloured Porsche in the driveway and headed to her room. Rothchild found her dead, still clutching the change from the cigarette vending machine in her hand.
