The Red Carpet? Movie Premieres? The Playboy Mansion? No, no, no. The only place to truly fly your too-cool-for-celebrities flag while in L.A. is right here – Canter’s Jewish Deli on Fairfax. Ok, so Mel Gibson won’t be there, but check out the honour roll of frequent diners since it opened in 1931: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller ate there, as did Jack Benny and Elizabeth Taylor. Other regular noshers have included Mel Brooks, Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali and Bill Cosby. Regardless of Canter’s seemingly prehistoric clientele, there’s no denying Fairfax is once again enjoying a resurgence in popularity. About three doors down from Canters is the skate store Supreme, the Fairfax markets (where Paris, Lindsay and Mischa sightings are frequent) are just up the road each Sunday, and The New Image Art Gallery is right around the corner. And if you need just one more excuse to check it out: The Price is Right is filmed just over the road so you might even bump into America’s version of Larry Emdur. Celebrities - now that’s what L.A. is all about.
