Beautiful? Without doubt. Powerful? Absolutely. Ned Kelly? Not even close. This image, captured in Alexandria, showcases the extraordinary talent of Paperplane’s contributing portrait artist Dustin Humphrey. Dustin originally went to Egypt as part of a surf exploration venture but came home with a swag of material that literally defies the fabric of time. There was actually too much to choose from. Ancient architecture juxtaposed by powerlines, housing and transport of modern civilisation. The board shorts and t-shirts of his travelling companions side to side with the traditional head to toe burqa clad women on bus rides through the city. It was the old world colliding with the new at every snap of the trigger. But it was this photograph that floored us. How such a small glimpse of something or someone can inspire so much from the imagination is exactly why we put this magazine together. Her story? Make up your own mind, but do it while you pack. This is just a sliver of what the world has to offer. Interesting fact: Alexandria wasn’t just founded by Alexander the Great (in 330BC), it was also ruled by the original Muhammad Ali. Float like a butterfly sting like a bee.
