Russia Day in Gorky Park
Evgeni Kogan | July 4th, 2007
On June the 12th (having started in 2003), the Russian Federation celebrates its official declaration of sovereignty. Since 2002 this holiday has been named ‘Russia Day.’ Of all the official holidays to be in Russia for, this perhaps is the best.
The weather is fantastic (this year the temperature was pushing 30), there is little police and military presence (as there is during both May holidays), and no underlying dread from the memories of the hardships that were overcome sometime during the twentieth century.
Instead your average Russians gather in parks, city squares: wherever they can and eat and drink to celebrate their country joining the rest of the world. This is a great time of the year to come here, take in everything Russia has to offer and party in the streets with the locals!
