Shimotakaido by Tania Kelley

On my recent trip to Tokyo I had the pleasure of staying in Shimotakaido a suburb in the Setagaya Ward, a couple of stops west of Shinjuku, on the keyno line.

There is something so cute about the suburbs of Tokyo. The small streets and compact houses seem almost doll like. Pedestrian pavements are indistinguishable form the street so the traffic usually moves at a leisurely pace, along with people on bikes and children on their way to and from school. Is it because the buildings are close to the street and as you walk by you feel like your only inches away from people’s private lives? Everything is so clean and compact. The bird calls at the station that announce the approaching trains are a nice touch too.
