Kourawhero Lodge

I rediscovered my romantic side a few months ago and decided it was time to take a break with my girlfriend up north for a bit of R&R.

Kourawhero Lodge is a tranquil and rather expansive location that completely takes you away from the city life, a perfect 40-50mins drive north of Auckland.

Our stay was only for one night, but the team at Kourawhero (Jenny and the gang) made us feel like we were the number one guests, a million miles away from our stresses.

The buildings are spread across quite a distance, so you need a car to travel from the main house to the cabins and the spa etc, which just adds to the privacy.

The rooms are delicious, with heated slate floors in the bathrooms, state-of-the-art baths with jet features and bubbles galore, dual showers, HUGE beds, gas fires in every room, and iPod’s with Bose speaker docks and a good selection of music pre-loaded.

Our dinner was $200 per head but included 5 courses, cooked to perfection and personally overseen by the head chef (who even took the time to speak to us after our main course and tell us a bit about the food). All foods (within reason) are grown, made and prepared on-site.

The spa facility was again low-key but spot-on. We had a couples massage, and despite it hurting a fair bit, I can’t fault the guy for his skill at finding every single knot in my back and shoulders and working it out.

Breakfast was divine, again overseen by Mr Head Chef and even delivered to our table by the man himself.

10 out of 10 for service, satisfaction and attention to detail.
