La Colombe d’Or – Truly Bohème by Maya Villiger

When your little hotel becomes a favorite of Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Calder and Braque who all spent time here over their long summers in the South of France, it’s the makings of something pretty special. Short on funds, these masters and others, painted for their supper, donating original works by the bundle. Thus the atmosphere is nothing short of extraordinary. Not like being in an art gallery, but rather hanging out in an old stone farmhouse, rustic and casual in it’s furnishings and cuisine, that just happens to be jam packed with works by the greatest Romantic and early Modernist artists.

But if the art collection is not reason enough to visit, the deep green (and deep) tiled pool, the bustling restaurant, elegant, somewhat overgrown gardens, easy to drink house wine and indulgent country style cuisine should be. It’s great.
