Canal Saint-Martin, in North-Eastern Paris, may be forever associated with the cute movie Amelie, yet for the independent fashion set, it’s a great place to hang out.

The bar “du jour” is Marcel, right next to one of the famous footbridges over the canal, on Quai Jemmapes. The food has a loosely middle eastern theme. Share some bite-sized starters, then order the salmon salad. Expect to see fashion indie types such as Ally Capellino, of the London bag label (popular in Paris) entertaining here as well as others in the growing tribe that is the “ethical fashion set”
