Eateries We Love - The Brooklyn Star

Deana Bianco | June 23rd, 2012

Comfort food is the rage in Brooklyn at the moment. The race is on between restaurants for the best friend chicken, biscuits and mac and cheese. Sick of waiting 30 minutes for tables at popular spots like Egg and Pies ‘n’ Thighs, I have become a loyal patron of The Brooklyn Star. The restaurant is a couple blocks off the Lorimer L stop in Brooklyn, which makes it easy to grab a seat at the bar or a table in the back. Start off with the baked to order cornbread. You can order it with plain or either jalapeno and bacon and it comes with honey and a slab of butter. The dishes are heavy so split either of these starters; friend pig tails or romain salad with bacon buttermilk dressing. As for mains, I am a BIG fan of the mussels and smoked sausage in a pinto beans and beer broth. Sounds like an odd combination but it works. There’s something about dipping the Texas toast in the broth that make it one of my favorite dish in Brooklyn at the moment. The trout is delicious and the country friend steak with mashed potatoes and bacon is hearty but scrumptious. I have yet to try the oysters, fried lamb sweetbreads with lamb bacon and the T-Bone. The water comes in empty whiskey bottles and the beer menu is quite impressive. I’d love to tell you about the dessert but I’ve been too full to order it every time I’ve been there.
